Business Analysis

The role of a Business Analyst (BA) is often seen as belonging to large corporates with huge IT projects. This downplays the value they can add to SMEs. Don’t confuse a Business Analyst with a Consultant! A good BA will challenge your thinking, not just tell you what you already know.

I have a wide experience of working in finance change. In larger organisations, roles are typically separate, Business Analyst, Project Manager, Finance Manager etc. In smaller firms, the role tends to become a multi skilled hybrid.

For Business Analyst roles the following framework would typically apply

Define the Problem

What is making us think we need to change? Are you just in a mess and need to do better? Are your systems old and unfit for purpose? Is the business stalling or lacking in strategy?

Define what ‘Fixed’ looks like

Do you need a new website? Does your order/fulfilment need to be digitalised? Is better cashflow the answer?

Options Generation

There is never just one path to Problem to Solution. Options will always be dependent on time, money and management appetite for change. Together we’ll produce a set of options and agree on the solution.

Solution Design

Could be a new ERP system. New staff training perhaps. Rationalising your product range to remove unprofitable lines. Whatever it is, we’ll map out the ‘as is’, the ‘to be’ and everything we need to get there.

Implementation Phase

This might be internal re-organisations or changes to processes. Usually involves an element of 3rd party resource and vendor management.

Test and Go Live

Any new systems/software will involve detailed Use cases and Test plans. Any organisational change will need training and possibly culture insights.

Defects and vendor management usually key here.

Project Wrapper

As well as Business Analyst activities, I provide a PM wrapper for Planning, Budget & Risk Management and Project Reporting.

The concept of a PM/BA hybrid working directly for an SME is a novel approach but one that works well. You get all the experience and knowledge of a finance professional, but with in built flexibility and (far!) lower rates than a large consultancy.
